Here at Philadelphia Plumbing we not only want to fix our customers problems, but we also want to educate everyone on what we really do and how things really work. Rather than just having our professional plumbers come out to your home to fix whatever problem you may have, we want you to know exactly how your systems work and where they came from. At Philadelphia Plumbing we want to change everyone's image of a plumber. Most people assume that all residential plumbers will come to your home looking sloppy and their pants hanging too far down. Instead, we want to be professional and educate the population on as much as we possibly can. In this article our plumbers are going to give you some background information on the garbage disposal.

In 1927 a man by the name of John W. Hammes created the garbage disposal. It was not until 1938 though that his company InSinkErator actually put this garbage disposer on the market for the public to purchase. Of course, this being the first version of the garbage disposal, there were many problems. The largest problem was that most cities had regulations prohibiting food waste going into the sewage system. After many many years the InSinkErator was finally able to convince people that this was a great invention and it was finally put into use.

Not surprisingly though, there were still some cities and states that still prohibited food waste going into the sewage system. One of these cities was New York City. At first, garbage disposals were allowed in the city, but after a few years they finally put a clause in the law as of 1997. The only reason this clause was created was because of a twenty one month study they did.

A similar thing occurred in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2008 they tried making it illegal to have a garbage disposal installed or replaced. After only one month of time though, this was revoked because people demanded to have their garbage disposals.

Today, the United State is still the leader in garbage disposals. Almost fifty percent of the homes in the United States have a garbage disposal installed. Most homes in Europe though do not have garbage disposals. In fact, less than ten percent of homes have them in Europe. In Britain though, they are actually offering subsidizing the cost of garbage disposals because it will decrease the amount of things that go into their landfills. Also, in Sweden they are also encouraging the use and installation of garbage disposals because they increase the production of biogas.

As you can see, even after so many years, garbage disposals are still not as widely used as you may think. In fact, if you were to move to another country you would most likely not have in your home.
